Recent Paintings by Jo Ann Rothschild
Simultaneous Exhibitions at Gallery AA/B and Open Studios

Quoting her teacher, the late Leo Garel, Jo Ann Rothschild compares art to an extra organ for the emotions. She states, "We have ears for hearing and eyes for looking, but our feelings occupy our whole being. Art provides structure for the emotions." Throughout her impressive career as a painter she has remained committed to Abstraction, "as the most direct route to the emotions." Also influenced by minimalism and the search for specific emotional colors, her recent small oils reflect this direction. One of the changes that has occurred in her work over the past twenty five years is that the color has become more expressive and expansive, with less emphasis placed on gesture .

For this prolific artist who has exhibited her work in galleries and museums throughout New England, in Chicago, New York and also in Cuba, these simultaneous exhibits offer a panoply of her extraordinary talent. As well as abundant paintings of varying scale and palette a videotape will be shown at the Boston exhibition. It is about the retrospective art exhibit Rothschild was given in 2001 in Havana, Cuba at the Gallery Imago. Strongly connecting with the Cuban art community, her faith in the expressive power of paint was firmly renewed, even amid the political constrictions placed on the people and their culture.

Rothschild was the first recipient of the Maud Morgan purchase prize of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1993 and she received a grant in painting in 1998 from the Mass Cultural Council. Her work has been included in exhibitions at The Institute of Contemporary Art, The Rose Art Museum and The DeCordova Museum among others.
